Always stupid shifts, last-minute changes –
is that okay?

What is permitted when it comes to shift planning? What counts as working time? And do I always have to be available? You can find information on these topics here.

Shift planning – what is permitted?

  • 1. What is allowed when it comes to shift planning?

    Shifts cannot simply be changed.

    • To ensure good planning, there is a shift schedule (usually 4 days in advance).
    • Your shift begins when you log in. Login time is working time.
    • If you are sick, you will be paid for the shift that was agreed in advance.
    • Changes to shifts must be traceable. You do not have to be available during your free time. And you do not have to agree to a shift change.
    • Get in touch with your works council/Betriebsrat.

You can find further information in german at the Ver.di Schichtplanfibel.

  • 2. What counts as working time?

What counts as working time? How long am I allowed to work each day? Am I entitled to take breaks? When does night work begin? Do I have to document my working hours? What happens if I am sick?
