Where can students go if they have questions about their studies?

Many riders in Berlin come to Germany to study—often at private universities. When difficulties arise with registration, student financing, or visa issues, many don't know where to turn. Here are a few suggestions on where you can get support.


Difficulties as a student in Berlin

  • 1. Where can I get general information about questions relating to studying?

    Do you have problems with labor law, bureaucracy, or general questions about studying? You can find help here:



    AStA or student council:


    • Every university usually has an AStA or student council that students can contact if they have questions or problems.
    • They often offer counseling appointments on topics such as student financing (BAföG, scholarships, student loans), legal issues (e.g., rental or labor law), study organization (changing majors, timetables), and social concerns (studying with children, mental health issues).
    • If your university does not have a student council, you can also contact the AStA/student council at other universities. 

    StudierendenWerk (Berlin): 


    • The StudierendenWerk is responsible for students from all over Berlin.
    • It offers counseling services on the following topics: student financing (such as BAföG, scholarships, housing subsidies, or labor law), mental health and social issues (such as exam anxiety, crises, addiction), legal questions, studying with children, and students with disabilities or chronic illnesses.
